Admissions

The department will admit graduate students to the Fall Semester only. Applicants must file a completed application for admission as well as all additional documents by the deadline. The deadline for admission to the Fall semester is normally on or before December 1st for Fellowship and non Fellowship applicants. Applications are accepted for the Ph.D. only. For U.S. citizens or current permanent residents, a nonrefundable fee of $105, (check or money order only) payable to the “Regents of the University of California,” and sent to the Cashier’s Office, must be submitted before we can process your application for admission. For all others the fee is $125.

Fee Waiver: U.S. citizens or permanent residents who can demonstrate financial need are eligible to apply for a waiver of the application fee. See guidelines for waivers.

Admission Checklist

-A completed University of California, Berkeley graduate application
-3 letters of recommendation
-Please submit a sample of your writing (no more than 15 pages) that best reflects your interests or previous work in the field. Examples include excerpts of theses, published work etc. The deadline to submit the writing sample is the same as the application deadline, December 1st.
-TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System (required for all international students).

All applicants can expect to hear a decision on their application at some point in February.  Due to the large number of applicants and inquiries, we highly discourage inquiring about your application unless you have not heard from us by early March.
