Sabbaticals
Sabbaticals are requested in the Spring semester for the following academic Fall/Spring terms. For inquiries related to sabbatical credits or for more information regarding eligibility and/or the sabbatical application process, please contact the Academic Personnel Analyst at AGES-AP@berkeley.edu.
Types of Sabbaticals
There are two types of sabbatical:
-
Regular sabbatical: Regular sabbatical leave provides salary at varying percentages of regular salary, depending on the amount of accrued sabbatical leave credit and option elected by the faculty member. A faculty on regular sabbatical leave is excused from all regular duties to focus on full-time research and/or study.
-
Sabbatical in Residence: *Sabbatical in Residence is defined as teaching one class which meets regularly at least three hours each week during the sabbatical period; or performing an equivalent amount of instructional service in a course or in a clinical setting. (Directed study, such as 298’s or 299’s, or other similar courses are NOT considered to be equivalent to such a regularly scheduled course, unless they have been reorganized as such under the department’s regular teaching workload policy.)
A Sabbatical Plan must be attached to all leave requests that include a period of sabbatical.
