Michael earned his B.A. in Political Science from Brooklyn College, CUNY in 2006 and M.A. in African Americans Studies from UC Berkeley in 2008. His research interests include African American literature, mid-19th to mid-20th century African American and American history, cultural studies, and African Diaspora critical theory. Michael is currently working on his dissertation, a cultural study of the ways in which African American literature engages the meanings of freedom and how it develops a unique politics of freedom between the late 1860s and early 1960s. In addition to these interests, Michael also enjoys learning, teaching, being a musician, and traveling.
