Black Graduation

Black Graduation Final Updates:

• Registration:
o For those who missed the online registration process, please come to the African American Studies Department office (660 Barrows) during normal business hours (9-12 and 1-4), where you will be asked to fill out an index card with your name, degree earned, major, and a 10-word personal statement.

• Tickets:
o All students who are signed up to participate in Black Graduation are entitled to 2 (two) free tickets to the ceremony. You may pick these up from the African American Studies Department office during normal business hours.
o All graduation guests must have their own ticket to be admitted into the Greek Theater on Saturday. Tickets are $5, and may be purchased in advance through the Cal Performances Box Office at Zellerbach Hall, or on Saturday at the Greek Theater Box Office. WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU PURCHASE YOUR TICKETS IN ADVANCE AT THE CAL PERFORMANCES BOX OFFICE SO THAT YOUR GUESTS DO NOT HAVE TO WAIT IN A LONG LINE AT THE GREEK THEATER ON SATURDAY AND RISK MISSING PART OF THE CEREMONY.

• Saturday Logistics:
o Graduates: please arrive at the Greek Theater at 12:30pm and go directly backstage. We will distribute your personal statements and organize lines for the processional. There will be no other rehearsal for the ceremony, so please be on time and help us keep the day on schedule.
o The ceremony will take place rain or shine on Saturday, May 12, at 2pm. The forecast is for moderate weather (60s/70s), but please check the weather reports and tell your guests to dress accordingly (umbrellas, sunscreen, hats, sweaters, etc.).
o Guests will be allowed into the Greek Theater at 1pm. Each guest must have his/her own ticket, including children over the age of 2.
o The ceremony will last approximately 2 hours, and we must be completely cleared out of the Greek theater by 5pm.
o There are several campus lots available for guest parking along Piedmont Avenue, as well as on Hearst Avenue. The small private lot adjacent to the Greek Theater is NOT available to the general public, but guests with impaired mobility may be dropped off there so they don’t have to walk up the stairs at the front of the Theater.

NOTICE

The Department of African American Studies is regretfully announcing that scheduled keynote speaker Boots Riley has made the decision not to cross campus picket lines and therefore will not deliver the keynote speech at this year's Black Graduation ceremony.

He wishes to stand in solidarity with UC Berkeley workers who have been asking for higher wages.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience(s) this may cause.
